Katarina Witt first began to skate as early as age five. Her natural talents was more evident, she received an entry into a Karl-Marx-Stadt school that specializes in children who have a sporting ability. The coach Jutta was also there. Witt was able to make her mark in 1982, when she placed second in her first World Championships at Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught everyone's attention immediately, and from that point onwards she was dominating the competition. Olympic triumph Katarina (now Witt) was awarded the Figure Skating gold medal at Sarajevo in the Sarajevo Winter Games. The victory she won four years earlier was even closer. The free skater was unable to win however she was awarded the gold medal in the mandatory figures and the short program. Witt is the first figure skater female to win this event two times since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt was allowed to resume skating after her accomplishments as a movie actress. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Witt was seventh in the competition, and she delighted the crowd even though she didn't win a medal. Witt was elected into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
